TheInternationalists.org uses visual material to explain international theatre, document relevant history, and support discussion of performance across borders. This policy sets standards for selecting images, identifying their sources, recording permissions, and addressing attribution concerns. It applies to photographs, posters, programme scans, diagrams, illustrations, screenshots, and other published visuals.
Each image requires an identifiable basis for use. This may be permission from an authorised rights holder, an applicable licence, a supported public-domain determination, or a relevant legal exception assessed for the particular use. Finding an image through a search engine, on social media, or within an old website does not establish permission to republish it. wipo.int
Before publication, the editorial standard is to record the image’s source, known creator, stated rights information, and any applicable restrictions. Unclear ownership or missing licence details require further investigation. An image should be withheld when a sufficient basis for its proposed use cannot be established. Attribution alone does not replace permission.
Credits should identify both the image and its context. Where applicable, the information should include:
- Creator: The photographer, illustrator, designer, or other credited author.
- Subject: The production, people, venue, object, or activity shown.
- Date and edition: The relevant performance, production version, or recording date, where known.
- Source: The supplying organisation, collection, archive, or original publication.
- Rights statement: The licence, permission statement, or supported public-domain designation.
- Changes: Relevant cropping, annotation, restoration, or other alterations.
Credits should appear beside the image, in its caption, or in a clearly linked credit note. Alternative text serves an accessibility purpose and should describe relevant visual information; it should not be the sole location for a required credit. Unknown details must remain identified as unknown rather than being guessed.
Production photography requires particular care. The photographer’s credit and the production’s artistic credits describe different contributions. A company supplying a photograph may not control every right relevant to its reuse. Where necessary, permission should be clarified with the photographer, authorised representative, or other appropriate rights holder.
Press and publicity images are subject to their supplied terms. Permission for editorial coverage may be limited by publication type, timing, territory, credit wording, or the permitted modifications. A downloadable press image should not automatically be treated as available for advertising, merchandise, unrestricted redistribution, or unrelated articles.
For Creative Commons material, the specific licence and version must be checked. Conditions may concern attribution, licence links, changes, commercial use, or the sharing of adaptations. The publication must comply with the applicable terms; “Creative Commons” is not a single unrestricted permission. Creative Commons
Historical material also needs a documented assessment. The age of a photograph, an unidentified creator, or an archive’s possession of a copy does not alone establish public-domain status. Applicable rights and collection conditions should be considered. A public-domain designation should identify its basis where practical, without suggesting that it resolves every possible restriction in every jurisdiction.
The earlier website’s use of an image does not establish rights for the rebuilt publication. Images associated with the Internationalists directors’ collective must be assessed individually. Domain ownership does not itself transfer photographers’ permissions, production archives, or other rights held by former contributors and organisations.
Images should remain faithful to their documentary purpose. Routine adjustments must not materially misrepresent the scene. Significant edits, reconstructions, colourisation, or restoration should be disclosed where they affect interpretation. A photograph from one production or edition must not be captioned as evidence of another.
AI-generated illustrations must be labelled clearly and handled under the AI Policy. They must not be presented as archival photographs, actual rehearsals, original costume designs, or documentation of real performances. Generated depictions must not imply that an identifiable artist participated in or endorsed the illustration.
Contributors offering images should explain their relationship to the material, provide the requested credit, and state the proposed permission or licence. Sending a file does not establish ownership or authorise publication beyond the agreed terms. Confidentiality, consent, cultural sensitivity, and the circumstances of people depicted should be considered, particularly for rehearsal spaces, private settings, and children.
Readers wishing to reuse an image should consult its individual credit and terms. TheInternationalists.org can grant permission only for rights it controls. Requests should identify the image and proposed use; third-party material may require a direct approach to its rights holder. Linking to an article does not grant a licence to copy its images.
Attribution and permission concerns are welcome through the Contact page. Please provide the page URL, identify the image, explain your connection to it, and include relevant supporting information. Credible concerns may require temporary restriction while reviewed. Confirmed errors should be addressed through corrected credits, an appropriate notice, replacement, or removal under the Corrections Policy.
